In 1976, our yacht Walross III crossed the Atlantic to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States. Fifty years later, we are setting sail once again to participate in the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of American independence —proudly representing Berlin on this historic occasion. This transatlantic journey symbolizes our broader mission: fostering international exchange and providing students with access to offshore sailing opportunities.

PROJECTS
1886 | The first adventure
The first ocean-going ship ‘Matador’ travels the Baltic Sea with a crew of six. Over the next 100 years, sea voyages on the North and Baltic Seas become an integral part of club life.
1972 | The Spitsbergen expedition
The Walross II, the predecessor of today's Walross IV, is the first German yacht to reach Spitsbergen with an ASV crew. Her skipper, club member Eckhart Hahn, is honoured with the Schlimbach Prize - the most important German award in ocean sailing at the time.
1976 | A Berlin greeting for the 200th anniversary of the USA
The ASV crew travelled to New York in the summer to celebrate the anniversary.
1981 - 82 I Whitbread Round The World Race
Motivated by the success of the Spitsbergen crew, the club decides to further establish itself in international ocean sailing. In 1981 and 1982, the ASV successfully took part in the Whitbread Round the World Race, today's Volvo Ocean Race, with its new ocean-going yacht Walross III. The Walross III is the only German yacht in this race around the world.
1987 - 1988 I Ambassador of 750-year-old Berlin for Australia's 200th anniversary celebrations
The project took the ship from Cuxhaven via the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, via Galapagos and Tahiti to the South Seas to Australia and back to Germany via Cape Horn and Rio de Janeiro between August 1987 and July 1988.
1992 I Walross III in the Columbus project
Following in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus, the Walross III sails in a large fleet from Germany via the Canary Islands to the Caribbean and from there via the USA back across the Atlantic to England and Scotland.
2000 I The Walross III off Greenland
After the ASV had travelled the Caribbean and the USA, including New York, the stay among icebergs in Greenland became a highlight of this project.
2008 I Journey to the Olympic Games in China
The Walross IV visited the Olympic Games in China as an ambassador on its three-year maiden voyage and sailed back to Berlin via Sydney and Cape Horn.
2013 I Walross IV at the Heineken Regatta
2016 I Reise zu den Olympischen Spielen in Rio de Janeiro
der ASV wird zum Botschafter und vertritt das Land Berlin.
2023 I Fastnet Race
An experienced crew fulfilled their dream of taking part in the Fastnet Race starting the race in 30 knots of wind, with gusts of up to 40 knots. They finished a proud 143rd overall and 16th in the IRC Zero group.
